Phoenix summers are brutal. There is no getting around it. For the past month, I don’t think the temperature has fallen below 100. In the words of daughter, it’s yucky. By now, most of you probably know about my little girl. But if you are new here, let me introduce you to Ella. She just turned three, she loves princesses, Mickey Mouse and Barbies, and most of all, she hates to sit still. Now that summer vacation is here (she is in preschool during the year), finding activities that get us out of the house is hard. All the fun places we frequent during the cooler months are just not possible when it’s 115 degrees outside. So for the past month, we thoroughly explored Phoenix and came up with this list of fun (and free!) activities for kids to beat the heat.
Before we get to this super fun list of free activities for kids, however, it’s important to make sure your car is up for the challenge. Phoenix is a huge city and with these crazy temperatures, the last thing you want is to get stranded. Keeping your car well-maintained is easy with the Walmart Auto Care Centers. For a hassle free oil change, find your closest Walmart Auto Care Center, drop off your car, and then go inside and pick up snacks, sunscreen, or whatever else you need for the day. When your car is done, they will give you a call. It’s the perfect one stop shop for easy summer travel. Plus, from now until September 28, Pennzoil® High Mileage Vehicle® is on Rollback to $35.88. My car has well over 75,000 miles on it, and I use the Pennzoil High Mileage Vehicle oil to help reduce leaks and oil consumption.
Now that your car is ready for summer fun, let’s move on to these totally awesome activities for kids!
Free Activities for Kids in Phoenix
1. Scottsdale Quarter Splash Park
With big, beautiful palm trees and lots of pretty flowers, this gorgeous splash pad is one of my favorite places. There is plenty of seating for parents and kids absolutely love it! It is the perfect way to spend a summer day, and when the sun starts to set, something special happens! The lights strung among the palm trees are lit and the fountains in the splash pad shine a brilliant blue. Visiting the Scottsdale Quarter at night is a must – it’s truly beautiful.
2. Rio Vista Recreation Center
This park has everything; playgrounds for younger and older kids (come before 9 am to beat the heat), a duck pond, bike trails and, of course, a splash pad. We like to come early and play on the playground and then cool off at the splash pad afterward.
3. Movies at the Paradise Valley Mall (Not Free, but Almost!)
Have you ever paid for expensive movie tickets only to have your kid meltdown during the previews? I have, and it stinks! Here is a great solution. During the summer, Picture Show Theater (located in the Paradise Valley Mall) has $1 movies for kids every Friday morning! Now if your child has a break down you can leave guilt free knowing the ticket was only $1.
4. Fashion Square Mall
This mall has one of the coolest indoor play areas I’ve seen, and Ella agrees! With a castle, ship, tree house, and cottage, kids love this whimsical playground.
5. Library Special Events
While the library might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to entertainment, don’t overlook this amazing free resource. Ella is always begging to go to the library. We have been to four or five Phoenix libraries and the children’s sections are always a fun place to hang. With toys, games, an art station, books and the chance to socialize with other kids, this is a great place to spend a few hours. They also offer outstanding free entertainment and classes for everyone from babies to adults. Ella’s favorites include Story Time and Discovery Time.
There you have it! Our list of fun and free activities for kids in Phoenix. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
