Matte nail polish is a huge trend this season and is a modern and sophisticated alternative to the standard high shine polishes. Of course, they sell special matte polishes, but if you don’t want to run to the store to pick one up, try this easy DIY idea. Using either a little cornstarch or powdered eyeshadow and a clear topcoat, you can easily make your own matte polish and even create a fun new color in the process.
The cupboards are always a little barren in my kitchen, so I skipped the cornstarch and headed for the eyeshadows. Since I already had a deep red polish on my nails, I wanted a matte top coat that would compliment the color. I ended up choosing a slightly shimmery golden hue. The result wasn’t entirely matte with the shimmer, but it still turned out beautifully. The process couldn’t be simpler – read on for step-by-step details.
DIY Matte Nail Polish: The Directions
In a small mixing dish, combine a small amount of powdered eyeshadow (make sure there are no clumps) and a few drops of a clear topcoat.
Next, using the nail brush from the clear polish, paint on a thin layer of the mixture on top of previously applied polish or to the natural nail.
*Tip – Make sure to clean the brush with nail polish remover before placing back into clear coat.
That’s all there is to it! I love this technique because the possible combinations of colors, sheens and base coats allow you to really get creative and find the perfect look for your event or outfit.
