In the past few weeks, combating my chronically chapped lips had become a full-time job. I had a whole arsenal of lip treatments including a chapstick in every coat pocket, purse, diaper bag I own. Even with all that, it was a constant battle to keep my painfully dry lips hydrated.
That is until I discovered this little secret…
The key to getting rid of dry, chapped lips is to first exfoliate and then apply moisture.
While there are many options for exfoliating lips scrubs available for purchase, making your own is incredibly easy. Bonus – this recipe uses all natural ingredients and tastes great!
DIY Lip Scrub Recipe
What you’ll need:
- Small containers (niceEshop 50 Pieces Travel Cosmetic Sample Containers 5 Gram Plastic Pot Jars
)
- Sugar
- Coconut Oil (Carrington Farms Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, 54 Ounce
)
- Vanilla Extract
Recipe:
- Mix equal parts sugar and coconut oil.
- Add in a few drops of vanilla extract at a time until you reach desired concentration.
- Spoon mixture into containers, pat down.
I have been using this scrub every other day for a week now, and my lips appear noticeably healthier. My favorite part? I am not reaching for the lip balm every other minute!
Makes a Great Valentine’s Day Gift
I am planning on mixing up a batch of lip scrubs for Valentines day gifts. This past weekend, I put together a couple samples, and I love how they turned out! I wrapped the jars in tulle and tied them with a red and white polka dotted ribbon. They are so adorable, and will make a perfect Valentine’s Day beauty treat!
Do struggle with constantly dry, chapped lips as well? Have you ever tried a lip scrub?

How much of each ingredient do you put in?
As much as you want as long as the amount of sugar and coconut oil are the same.
I LOVE these two scents and especially together! So simple too! I can’t wait to try it out!

Popping over from Totally Terrific Tuesday on Sparkles of Sunshine =) How fun! I use lip scrubs from LUSH, popcorn flavor to be exact. How long does this last? Spoilage wise? I was thinking about putting a spa basket together for the ladies at work. This would be perfect! Thanks for sharing, I’m stopping by from Totally Terrific Tuesday, happy Tuesday!
Wow! That’s such a simple recipe! I’ll definitely have to try it.
I love the way you found a container in the travel department! I would have never thought of that!
Mmm! I think I need to make a batch! I’ve been thinking it will be a good addition for a bridal shower gift. This recipe is supppper easy! And who doesn’t love easy. I’m thinking of a lemon one! 🙂
LOVE this! Thanks so much for sharing. Pinning!
Do you have to melt the coconut oil first to liquidfy it or do you use it in its solid form? Thank you
Great question Suzanne! I placed the jar of oil in warm water for a few minutes. It makes it much easier to mix into the sugar.
Oh my goodness, I bet these smell divine and they look gorgeous too.
Such a neat idea, cant wait to make some myself and give as little gifts

This would be a perfect present for a bridal shower too. So sweet!
How awesome! My lips are chapped right now and I have all of these ingredients in my kitchen! Guess what I’m doing tonight!? Thanks!
I don’t have trouble with dry lips, but my hands are like sandpaper. I would love to try this on my hands and cuticles.
I LOVE lip scrubs but this is the first I have seen with coconut! I am going to make this – we love coconut here in this household. Lip scrubs are a fun winter day or rainy day project with my young adult daughter. Thank you for sharing this with us!
I just used a lip scrub for the first time last year and became addicted. Now if only I could adapt this to help smooth my heals I’d be in heaven!
Hahah….heels, smooth my heels….heal my heels, you get it!
Exfoliating first makes sense it works for every other part of our bodies. Thank you for the tip and the recipe! I can’t wait to try them both.
I think your prototype looks lovely and will make a nice gift. My daughter gets terribly chapped lips when the temperatures drop and I have never thought of getting her to use a scrub.
If I can get hold of some coconut oil (something I’ve been meaning to do for some time now), I’ll make some up for her to try.
Thank you for sharing this post.

Your blog is beautifully designed. Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe! I love all homemade beauty products. And coconut oil is my favorite not-so-secret ingredient. 😉
Those would be perfect Valentine’s Day gifts!
I struggle with dry and chapped lips all year round, so I will have to give this a try!
