Blogging can get really expensive really fast! What seems like a cheap way to start a home business (and it is cheap compared to the start-up costs of most other businesses), between the computer, camera, lightening equipment, hosting fees, course, etc. – it all adds up pretty quickly. Especially in the beginning of your blog career, before you are making any money, all these expenses can seem overwhelming.
Many new bloggers feel they have to hire an expensive webs designer to get a professional website, but I don’t think that is true. Today, I want to show you how to design a beautiful and FREE WordPress header image.

How to Create a FREE WordPress Header Image
Having an appealing and easy to navigate website is so important. After all, if people are confused by your site, they will just leave! And we don’t want that. Until your blog starts making money, I would suggest holding off on hiring a blog designer. Professional designers are very expensive and definitely not necessary for success. You can create a simple, professional website yourself. Believe me, if I can do it, ANYONE can.
Start with picking your brand colors and getting yourself a header:
How to Pick Your Blog Colors
While some people are naturally gifted at putting together color schemes that look amazing, many of us, myself included, are not. If you need a little help picking your colors, try this easy tip to get you started.
Begin with the color you love most or the color you wear most often. This will be your primary color. For your second color, choose a neutral (black, white, gray, wood grain, metallic, etc).
Another option is to head over to Pinterest and search for “color schemes”. Pinterest has thousands of beautiful color schemes to inspire you and help you find the perfect color combination for your site.
Okay, go pick your colors!
Two Ways to Get a Header
The header, or top portion of your blog, is what a reader sees first when they visit your site. It’s just like dating, the first impression is the most important! Let’s spend a little time creating a nice header.
You have two options here:
A. Hire a Designer
I know…I just told you NOT to hire a designer, but hear me out. While you can create your own header, it’s often easier to just head over to Fiverr, and browse though the different logo designers and find someone who fits with your personal style. You’ll then fill out a simple inspiration form and they will make you a header for only $5. It’s totally worth it!

B. DIY It!
If you really want to try the DIY route, you can find beautiful free graphics at places like Creative Market (click on “free goods” at the top of the page) and then edit them to add your blog name and tagline with the online design program, PicMonkey.

How to Design a WordPress Header Image:
Step 1: Create a Canvas
Click on “design” from the PicMonkey homepage. In the left hand menu, click “resize”, and type in the size you would like your header to be. Mine is 1200 x 400 px.
Step 2: Add Text and Pictures
Here’s is the fun part – making your vision come to life. To begin designing your header:
Click on the “Tt” to add your blog’s name and tagline. Then click on the image of the butterfly to add photos, borders, shapes, and other design elements. Play around with the different features, until you have a header image you love.
Step 3: Download Your Image
Once you are happy with your work, click “save” from the top menu. This will save your work to the Hub in PicMonkey, so you can edit it later if you want to. Then, click on “export” to save your image to your computer.
How to Add a Header in WordPress
I am often asked how to change a header in WordPress. Changing your website can seem scary (at least it is for me!), but WordPress actually makes it really easy to customize your blog – even if you don’t know anything about web design.
Here are the five simple steps to install your header using self-hosted WordPress:
- Go to your dashboard, and hover over the Appearance tab on the left. A secondary menu will pop up – click on Customize.
- Once you click on the Customize tab, a preview of your current design will come up as well as options to change the logo, colors, background etc. Click on Site Title and Tagline and then Your Logo.
- From there, you will have the option to upload the header image you previously created and preview it.
- Optional – Change your colors and background image to match your new header.
- When you are happy with your final design, click Save and Publish.
